Lessons From more than 25 Years in Technology

Twenty-five years ago, my relationship with technology began with curiosity, even before I owned my first desktop computer in year 1998. I wasn’t thinking about careers, certifications, or job titles. I simply wanted to understand how things worked. Every new program, every operating system, and every problem I encountered became an opportunity to learn something new.

Since then, technology has changed beyond recognition. We moved from dial-up internet to cloud computing, from desktop software to mobile applications, and from manually writing every line of code to collaborating with artificial intelligence. Entire industries have appeared while others have disappeared. Yet despite all these changes, many of the most valuable lessons I learned have had very little to do with technology itself.

Curiosity Is More Valuable Than Knowing Everything

When I started learning about computers, information was much harder to find. Tutorials were limited, online communities were small, and solving a problem often required hours of experimentation. Looking back, those challenges taught me something more valuable than any specific programming language or software product. They taught me how to learn independently.

I remember in summer 1999, I was living in a village with no internet access. I used to visit a nearby city where they had an internet cafe, and I browsed multiple online forums specialized in programming to download sample Visual Basic 6 codes on floppy disks, and used to run back home excited to test it and take parts of the codes as functions to improve my developed programs.

Today, information is available almost instantly. Artificial intelligence can answer questions within seconds, and thousands of courses are only a click away. The challenge is no longer finding information, but remaining curious enough to keep asking better questions. Technologies will continue to change throughout your career, but curiosity remains one of the few skills that never becomes obsolete.

Technology Never Stops Changing

Every few years, a new technology appears that promises to change everything. Some of these predictions become reality, while many disappear almost as quickly as they arrived. During the past twenty-five years, I have seen countless programming languages, frameworks, devices, and platforms rise in popularity before eventually being replaced by something newer.

This constant change teaches an important lesson: do not build your identity around a specific technology. Learn the fundamentals that remain valuable regardless of the tools being used. Programming languages, software platforms, and development frameworks will come and go, but problem-solving, logical thinking, communication, and continuous learning remain valuable in every generation of technology.

Soft Skills Become More Important Over Time

Many people begin their careers believing that technical ability alone determines success. Technical knowledge is undoubtedly important, especially during the early years. However, as responsibilities grow, other skills become equally important.

The ability to explain complex ideas clearly, understand business objectives, collaborate with different teams, manage expectations, and make thoughtful decisions often has a greater impact than knowing one more programming language. Technology solves problems, but people define which problems are worth solving.

The Best Solutions Are Usually the Simplest

One lesson that experience reinforces repeatedly is that complexity is rarely a sign of quality. In fact, the opposite is often true. The most effective systems are usually those that are simple enough to understand, maintain, and improve over time.

Early in my career, I often admired sophisticated technical solutions. Today, I admire solutions that achieve the same goal with fewer moving parts. Simplicity reduces errors, improves reliability, and allows future developers to continue building without unnecessary obstacles. Building something simple is often much harder than building something complicated.

Technology Exists to Serve People

It is easy to become fascinated by new technologies simply because they are innovative. However, technology has value only when it solves real problems for real people. A technically impressive solution that nobody needs contributes very little compared to a simple solution that improves someone’s daily life.

Throughout my career, I have learned that successful projects begin by understanding people before selecting technologies. The best software is not defined by the sophistication of its architecture, but by the value it creates for its users.

Artificial Intelligence Changes the Tools, Not the Principles

Artificial intelligence is undoubtedly one of the biggest technological shifts I have witnessed. It has transformed the way developers write code, marketers create content, designers generate images, and businesses automate routine tasks. It will continue reshaping countless professions over the coming years.

Yet AI has not changed the importance of critical thinking, engineering judgment, creativity, ethics, or responsibility. Instead, it has made these qualities even more valuable. As AI becomes increasingly capable of performing routine work, human value shifts toward asking better questions, making better decisions, and understanding problems more deeply.

Keep Learning, Even When You Become Experienced

Perhaps the biggest lesson I have learned is that experience should never become an excuse to stop learning. The moment we believe we already know enough is often the moment our knowledge begins to fall behind.

Every new technology, project, challenge, and conversation still offers an opportunity to discover something new. After twenty-five years, I still consider myself a student of technology. The tools have changed dramatically since I first started, but the excitement of learning has remained exactly the same.

Technology will continue evolving faster than any of us can predict. Some of today’s most popular tools will eventually disappear, while entirely new industries will emerge. Trying to master every technology is impossible, but learning how to adapt is not.

Looking back, I realize that the most valuable lessons from the past twenty-five years were never about computers alone. They were about curiosity, continuous learning, simplicity, communication, and remembering that technology is ultimately a means to improve people’s lives. The tools will keep changing. The mindset that allows us to grow with them is what truly lasts.
